Adapt a chair, anywhere!

What is a Sit-Kit?

  • The Sit-Kit is a portable, integrated set of cushions and accessories that can be used to adapt a wide variety of chairs and seats to allow a person with dwarfism or short stature to sit comfortably.

It can be used with most chairs, car, airline and railroad passenger seats, restaurant and theater seats, religious institution seating, such as pews, and other seating.

The customizable design provides foot, back and neck support to allow a user to be comfortable and fully present without the distraction and discomfort of trying to accommodate their body unassisted to seating designed for average-height bodies.

  • - Open source so anyone can make it

    - Lightweight (around 5 lbs. with accessories)

    - Compact (fits within the permissible dimensions of a piece of airline carry-on luggage)

    - Pocket storage for footstools up to 10” high and different carrying straps

    - Pocket storage for small lumbar-support cushions and other accessories like seatbelt clips

    - Portable with carrying handles and attachment points for shoulder straps and backpack straps

    - Detachable piece for head support for use with reclining airline, car and other seats

    - Removable cushion slip covers for easy cleaning

    - Customizable cushion thickness to adapt to different body sizes and proportions

  • Check out our illustrated guide below to see how to measure yourself for a custom Sit-Kit that fits your body's needs.

  • We've teamed up with Baltimore upholsterer Ibello Upholstery Co. to fabricate Sit Kits for us to distribute at Little People of America (LPA) events and locally.

If you'd like to have your own Sit Kit, you can contact us via the email hello@thesit-kit.com, contact Ibello Upholstery, or download the plans and take them to an upholsterer in your area.

The plans are free but the Sit Kit does cost money for materials and accessories. Cost varies depending on your provider.

  • The Sit Kit plans on this website provide specs for an upholsterer to create the cushions for the Kit.

However, a complete Sit Kit also needs a footstool, straps for carrying, and an optional lumbar support cushion.

Foot stools like this one can be purchased online or in stores. Check out our measuring guide for foot stool sizing instructions.

Straps like these and these can be purchased online and in many places luggage is sold. The key is to purchase straps that have clips for attaching to your Sit Kit (versus straps with only D rings)

The Sit Kit cushion plans available on this site also have space to store a lumbar support pillow.

Any upholsterer should be able to take the plans listed here and fabricate a Sit-Kit for you with your specific modifications (see our illustrated guide for measuring yourself to customize the plans).

Sit-Kit Demonstration

How to measure for a customized Sit-Kit

    1. Sit upright with the backs of your legs below the knee about ½ inch from the edge of the chair seat

    2. Measure the distance from the chair back to your back.

The Sit-Kit plans provide for a total of six inches thickness for both cushions together (1-3/4” and 4-1/4”)

If you find that your A distance is more or less than 6 inches, adjust by adding or subtracting from the thickness of the larger cushion to get the thickness of the Sit-Kit that will work best for you.

(Example: Jon’s back measures 6 ½ inches from the back of the chair, so he adds a half inch to the larger cushion, meaning the cushions are now 1 ¾” and 4 ¾”)

    1. Sit in the same position as above (forward on the chair seat with about ½” from the seat edge to the back of the lower leg).

    2. Keep your feet pointed horizontally and measure the distance from the floor to the bottoms of your feet to determine the best footstool height.

The small pockets in the Sit-Kit design will accommodate a 5-inch Econo-High folding footstool or smaller.

The large pocket in the design should accommodate up to a 10-inch folding footstool if put in on its side.
